Paint Variants and Types to Consider for your next Home Painting Project

In Elle Decor, Tim McKeough gave readers an understanding of 5 Important Facts to remember when picking out paint colors for your next residential paint project. These are some great bits of information that we at RR Styles love to have clients know before working with us.

In this post, I will summarize McKeough's points and add a few pieces of additional advice:

Water-Based Paints Provide You with Convenience

The advantages of using water-based paints include:

  • Lower level VOCs (volatile organic compounds)

  • Simple cleanup using water

  • Fast-drying

  • Very elastic, durable finish making it more immune to cracking

  • Stable tone and hue over time, longer time without discoloration

Enjoy the Added Quality of Oil-Based Paints

  • Robust and Tasteful gloss

  • Strong "evening" capacity: paint from the brush tends to fill into various grooves during application, creating a very even and smooth finish

  • Hard, durable finish once dry

Silky Sheen Paints to Give Walls a Facelift

When choosing any paint, you will need to make a decision about the finish: the level of sheen you want to see once the paint dries. There are three main categories of finishes to consider; while each finish-type will possess slightly different qualities depending on the paint manufacturer, the following guidelines can help you decide what kind of finish will work for your project.

Matte paint: • In terms of sheen, is the least-reflective variant on the market • Possesses a velvet-like texture • Is incredibly handy when trying to hide imperfections in walls and ceilings • Offers considerable complexity of color • Is generally viewed as the standard sheen for interior walls • Can sometimes be difficult to clean

Satin Paints and Eggshell (satin provides more of a gloss than eggshell-based paints): • Have some reflectivity • Very durable • Are often used in rough environments, like kitchens and bathrooms, where easy cleanup without a particularly glossy finish is desired

Semi-glossy and Glossy paints: • In terms of sheen, are the most glossy • Are highly durable and stand up to multiple cleanings • Are generally applied to doors, baseboards and moldings • Can highlight the grandeur of a surface, but also reveal imperfections

Spring is on the way and you will likely want to give your NYC home or property a much needed touchup or makeover after a long winter. This upgrade can be as simple as a fresh coat of paint and a professional application.
